Have Twins, Will Travel

Road Trip to Pittsburgh

Scranton, Pennsylvania – It’s our first family vacation in over a year! And we’re going to… (drumroll)… Pittsburgh? Yes! Road trip to Pittsburgh!

Somehow, I have not been able to tell anybody about our vacation plans without giving an explanation, so here goes.

Daddio’s family hales from the coal mining region near Pittsburgh, and he has always wanted to go there to see where his father grew up. S and V’s best friends moved to Pittsburgh last year, so Daddio decided this was the perfect opportunity to take the whole family on a heritage tour, and the twins could see their friends as a bonus.

Personally, I thought that sounded like a great thing for Daddio to do with the kids, while I go to my cousin’s wedding in Sonoma, California.

Finally, Daddio came up with a perfect solution. We would all take a road trip to Pittsburgh to discover the family’s coal-mining roots. Then we would leave the twins with their friends, while Daddio and I fly to California for the wedding and a kid-free weekend. It’s a win-win-win!

So here we go…

We did not get off to an auspicious start. On our first day we drove to Scranton, Pennsylvania. We stopped here because a friend recommended the Lacakwanna County Coal Mine Tour. It does seem interesting (and fun!) and I thought it would help the kids understand their grandfather’s background. Alas, the authentic coal mine car is broken and the mine is closed. They don’t know when it will be fixed. I was pretty disappointed, but I might have been the only one.

Instead, the kids frolicked in the hotel pool and we took Daddio out for a Father’s Day dinner. Next stop: Pittsburgh!
