Boston, Mass – After the Boston Marathon bombings last year, a spontaneous memorial sprung up on Copley Square, as mourners left flowers, signs and running shoes as tribute to the victims. The items were eventually removed to the city archives, and a permanent memorial is being planned.
In the meantime, in honor of the one-year anniversary of the tragedy, the Boston Public Library is displaying some of the items in an exhibit entitled Dear Boston: Messages from the Marathon Memorial. As Peter Walsh wrote in a review of the exhibit:
“Each piece clearly has some special, personal meaning for its donor. Together, the inscriptions make up a chorus of consolations for a wounded city.”
Hold a hand. Shed a tear. Say a prayer. Love wins.
