Åland, Finland – We had an amazing day with our “Finnish cousins”, taking in all the Åland highlights, including Kastelholm & Bomarsund. Our first stop was the 14th-century Kastelholm castle.
The second stop on Åland was the picturesque Jan Karlsgården outdoor museum. This is where we sampled the quintessential, cardamom-spiced Åland pancake (more like bread pudding than a pancake, but still delicious).
And finally, Bomarsund is the beautifully situated and totally climbable ruins of a 19th-century Russian fortification.
