Bolzano, South Tyrol – It’s a cloudy day in the Dolomites, so we decided to spend the morning with Ötzi the Iceman. Hikers in the nearby mountains found this 5000-year-old mummy frozen in the ice. He now resides at the South Tyrol Museum of Archaeology.
It’s is amazing how much scientists have learned about Ötzi and his lifestyle, from studying his remains, his weapons and his clothing. They even know what he ate for his last meal!
The museum is really well done, with plenty of scientific explanations for laypeople and hands-on activities for kids (and adults). And of course, a glimpse of the mummy himself. There’s no time to linger, unfortunately, but he’s pretty memorable.
