San Miguel de Sarapiquí, Costa Rica – What a thrill to be back in Costa Rica for a Lonely Planet guidebook update! This whole thing came about rather unexpectedly, so I am traveling solo (for now), during the rainy season, with a bare outline of an itinerary. First stop: a farm-stay in the tiny mountain village of El Socorro near San Miguel, where I will be living la vida rural for a few days.

My host is José Miranda at the Albergue El Socorro, a small dairy farm that also offers fabulous birding, waterfall hikes and a magnificent view of Poás volcano in the distance.
The lodgings are simple, the scenery is gorgeous and the vibe is incredibly relaxing. José is a gentle soul and a congenial guide, while his wife is an incredible cook. It is a perfect place to kick off this round of Costa Rica adventure. Pura vida!
