Basseterre, St Kitts – This is the view from my apartment in St Kitts. So begins a three-week tour around some of the Leeward islands, updating the Lonely Planet guide to the Caribbean. Without twins, sadly. But I’m not going to let that spoil my fun. Here are some highlights from St Kitts so far.
Mount Liamuiga
On a whim, I signed up with Jungle Bikes Tours to climb Mt Liamuiga, a dormant volcano that also happens to be the highest peak on St Kitts, at 3792 feet. I immediately started dreading it, as it’s supposed to be a very difficult hike. But it was fantastic! It helped that the trail was not muddy, which is one of the things that often makes it a challenging hike. I also appreciated the clear view into the (now forest-covered) crater from the top. Wonderful!
Beach Hopping around the Southeast Peninsula
St Kitts has a long tail that wags off its southern end, lined with luscious beaches. I spent a day exploring them all! The snorkeling wasn’t great but the views were sublime. Here is The Strip, lined with beach bars for your sunset watching pleasure.
Here you see the Atlantic on the left, the Caribbean on the right, and the sister island of Nevis in the distance. And that’s where I am headed next!
