Have Twins, Will Travel

Children’s Lit Tour

Springfield and Amherst, Mass – There must be something in the Pioneer Valley water that fosters creativity and playfulness. Or maybe it’s just a coincidence that two of America’s most celebrated kids’ lit author-illustrators lived in this region. Today they both have fantastic museums dedicated to their life’s work, which are fun and inspiring destinations for young and old alike.

And here I am, updating the Lonely Planet guide to New England for the umpteenth time, and I have never brought the twins to these museums. And now they are twin-agers, so I probably never will. The years are short, friends. Too short.

The Amazing World of Dr Seuss

The Amazing World of Dr Seuss, located in Springfield’s Museum Quadrangle, celebrates the life and work of Theodore Geisel, who was born and raised in Springfield. He went on to create more than 60 children’s books, some of which are the best-selling children’s books of all time. The first-floor exhibits engage children with hands-on activities, while the galleries upstairs display original artwork and a moving collection of letters, as well as Geisel’s re-created studio.

I always get a little studio envy when I see the workplaces of world famous writers who have museums dedicated to them. And this was no exception. Geisel’s quirkiness and whimsy shines through in every detail.

Eric Carle Museum of Picture Book Art

Eric Carle, author and illustrator of The Very Hungry Caterpillar, lived and worked in Northampton for more than 30 years. The superb museum showcases book illustrations from around the world, in addition to the permanent collection of Carle’s own vibrant work. There are also read-alongs and art activities for all.

No photography allowed in the main gallery, but I did get this photo of the raven from Chip Has Many Brothers. (Yes, I have a thing for ravens now.)

High Five Books

Both museums have excellent bookstores; but if you (or the kiddos) didn’t find what you
were looking for, you’ll probably find it at High Five Books in Florence (a village of Northampton). They have everything from board books to YA novels. (Kiddos, you can thank me later!)
