Sitka, Alaska – I am thrilled to be back in the Land of the Raven, aka Southeast Alaska. I am covering this region for the next edition of Lonely Planet Alaska. Southeast is also the home of the Tlingit people and the setting for The Last Stand of the Raven Clan.
I started my month-long trip through the Land of the Raven in Sitka. This delightful city is the former capital of Russian America and the site of the Tlingit-Russian war (which you can read about here and here). Aside from the fascinating history, its location absolutely gorgeous — perched on the edge of Baranof Island in the shadow of Mount Edgecumbe. My trip started with some sunshine (a rarity in these parts), not to mention sea lions frolicking in the harbor, bald eagles soaring overhead, and yummy rockfish tacos for lunch. Here we go, Alaska!
