Waimea, Kauai – In the southwest corner of Kauai, the town of Waimea is the gateway to the Waimea Canyon, a magnificent red-earth gorge. They call it the Grand Canyon of the Pacific (of course they do). It’s not quite that, but it is 10 miles long and 3000 feet deep. And it is spectacular.
There is a scenic drive overlooking the canyon, with several lookout points, picnic areas and hiking trails. I thought this would be a welcome change of pace, after our nonstop adventures.
Alas, the twins grew quickly bored. They were not wowed by the scenery – at least not after the first stop. And they got tired of getting in and out of the car. I insisted that we do a few short-ish hikes along the way to break things up. But everybody was anxious to keep moving.
But never mind my kids’ short attention span when it comes to scenery. Waimea Canyon is pretty amazing – especially considering it exists within the relatively small area of Kauai island. And it’s a wonderful outing for anyone who comes to Kauai–except maybe an 11-year-old boy.
